A Brighter (Green) Future

By Association Adviser staff • November 5, 2012

Everywhere you turn, someone is going green. Setting your compass in an environmentally conscious direction is relatively easy, but holding it steady and sustaining the effort is easier said than done. Experts suggest that modest goals and continuous incremental improvements can add up to significant results.

That’s why Naylor exercises corporate responsibility with procedures intended to reduce its carbon footprint and conserve natural resources.

  • For your print-based member publications and announcements, consider using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper stock, 100-percent recyclable PVC coil binding and vegetable inks made from soy.
  • To improve your green delivery process, verify each address with the post office to avoid wasted mailings and reduce your reliance on polybagging, and use 100-percent recyclable bags when you must polybag.
  • Conserve energy by switching to fluorescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs in your buildings and program your thermostats to use less energy during evenings and weekends.

“We believe that companies can be profitable and environmentally responsible in the publishing industry and establish a solid environmental record,” said Glenn Buffie, Naylor’s plant and distribution manager. “A lot of our customers have been demanding greater environmental responsibility and commitment from us, and we have always exceeded their expectations.”

Here’s a look at a few green policy actions Naylor has implemented:

Our products

We strive to ensure our products are as environmentally friendly as possible through Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper stock, 100-percent recyclable PVC coil binding and vegetable-based inks made from soy, which contain extremely low amounts of volatile organic compounds. For a green delivery process, we verify each address with the post office to reduce waste. We have significantly reduced polybagging of our publications and the polybags we do use are 100-percent recyclable.

Our facilities

Every effort is made to reduce waste. We work paperless as often as possible through electronic capabilities, and the paper we use is made new again. Naylor will recycle more than 360 metric tons of paper-related material this year.

Sustainability is ensured in our press rooms by converting chemicals into renewable products and recycling 38,000 pounds of aluminum plates each year.

To conserve energy, all Naylor offices and production facilities use fluorescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs, and our thermostats are programmed to use less energy during evenings and weekends.

With the right plan in place, associations large and small reduce member communication costs and improve bottom lines from both a financial and socially responsible perspective.
